Specialized Training Programs for Therapeutic Yoga Lifestyle Practitioners

The Open Hand Institute offers specialized Therapeutic Yoga Lifestyle and Movement Training programs for those interested in learning how to maintain their most precious asset -- their mind, body, and spirit well-being.

The Open Hand Institute was originally founded in 2015 in order to share the Therapeutic Astanga Method.© This method was developed by Dr. Nydia Tijerina Darby and combines over 40 years of physical therapy, fitness, and yoga lifestyle practices and is designed to draw out the therapeutic potential of traditional Hatha yoga asana and other movement forms. The Therapeutic Astanga Method© informs the Therapeutic Yoga Research Interventions that Dr. Darby develops and implements in Therapeutic Yoga and Cancer research with the University of Texas Health in San Antonio.

The Open Hand Institute is a platform that was created to unite Therapeutic Yoga lifestyle practitioners, yoga studios, and medical and scientific communities. OHI is directed towards supporting the continuing education of Therapeutic Yoga lifestyle students and practitioners, certified yoga teachers, and medical and scientific professionals.OHI is directed toward presenting the Therapeutic Astanga Method© that has been developed by Dr. Nydia Tijerina Darby. TAM© is directly influenced by the Eight Limbed Yoga Lifestyle Path and practices.

The Open Hand Institute is influenced by the teachings of various yoga, medical, creative, lifestyle, and scientific experts: Beryl Birch, Brené Brown, Thich Nhat Hanh, Uma Dinsmore Tuli, Donna Farhi, David Keil, Herbert Benson, Stephen Porges, David Williams, Sharon Salzburg, BKS Iyengar, David B. Darby, Pedro & Bobbie Tijerina and my siblings in the Tijerina clan.

The Open Hand Institute offers programs on-site at the lovely Serenidad Studio at Nydia’s Yoga Therapy Studio in San Antonio, Texas and offers unique travel learning experiences to exotic locations in Mexico and South America. Nydia facilitates group learning adventures and also is available offer gentle mentoring and facilitation of individualized in-person and livestream training.

A series of Therapeutic Yoga Research Teacher Training Programs are in the planning stages to educate, elevate and train certified yoga teachers who will then be eligible to apply to join Nydia’s Therapeutic Yoga Research Team of teachers for future Therapeutic Yoga and Cancer Research. THERAPEUTIC YOGA RESEARCH

Nydia is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Therapeutic Yoga Specialist, and Yoga Researcher who has melded 40 years of experience combining fitness, physical therapy, and yoga to create the Therapeutic Yoga Interventions that form the foundation for Cancer Research for Breast, Prostate and varied Cancer Survivors since 2009.

These practices have formed the foundation for the Yoga programs that she creates with her peers in the research teams at UTHealth in San Antonio.

Results of this research have determined that practicing therapeutic yoga 3 times per week over the course of 6 months can improve respiratory and functional capacity and can have a positive effect on the quality of life.
