Therapeutic Yoga Lifestyle & Teacher Training

The Open Hand Institute (OHI) is offering qualified candidates the opportunity to participate in specialized Therapeutic Yoga Lifestyle and Teacher Training programs at the 200 hour and 300 hour levels.

OHI was originally founded in 2015 and teaches a specialized variation of the traditional Hatha Yoga that has been adapted by Dr. Nydia Tijerina Darby.  This method is a culmination of over 40 years of combined movement and yoga lifestyle practices that is designed to draw out the therapeutic potential of traditional Hatha yoga asana and other movement forms.  Welcome to the Therapeutic Astanga Method.™

The Open Hand Institute is a platform that was created in order to unite yoga lifestyle practitioners, yoga studios, medical and scientific communities in South Texas and beyond.  OHI is directed towards supporting the continuing education of yoga lifestyle students and practitioners, certified yoga teachers, medical and scientific professionals.  OHI is directed towards presenting the Therapeutic Astanga Method™ (TAM™) that has been developed by Dr. Nydia Tijerina Darby.  TAM™ is directly influenced by the Eight Limbed Yoga Lifestyle Path and practices.

This school is influenced by the teachings of various yoga, medical, creative, lifestyle and scientific experts:  Brené Brown, Beryl Bender Birch, Thich Nhat Hanh, Nicolai Bachman, Uma Dinsmore Tuli, David Keil, Herbert Benson, TKV Desikachar, David Williams, David Swenson, Matthew Sanford, Donna Farhi, Stephen Porges, Sharon Salzburg, BKS Iyengar, the Tijerina clan, and many others.

The Open Hand Institute is located on the property of Nydia’s Yoga Therapy Studio in San Antonio, Texas.  This Serenidad Studio is located on a lovely 2.5 acre residence of Dr. Nydia Tijerina Darby. When students arrive, they experience a lovely walk along the outdoor paths leading to the Serenidad studio with lush bird & butterfly gardens all situated within a rustic setting.  The Serenidad studio, where most of the trainings occur is a lovely and comfortable space that has a unique flooring system (Tatami Mats) that make transitions and work on the floor comfortable for mature students or those with musculoskeletal limitations.

The Open Hand Institute is a Registered Yoga School (RYS) with Yoga Alliance at the 200 hour and 300 hour, which designates this teacher training program as one which follows Yoga Alliance’s standards. Students who complete a verified training with this school may be eligible to register with Yoga Alliance as Registered Yoga Teachers (RYTs).

Programs are provided in small groups which allow Nydia as the Lead Trainer to offer gentle mentoring and facilitation of in person and virtual (on-line) training.

As of March 2020, the Open Hand Institute has transitioned the on-site Therapeutic Yoga Teacher Trainings to Virtual Livestream to help to keep Physical Distancing requirements due to Covid-19.   The 2021 trainings occurred via livestream.  The 2022 trainings will focus on Introducing the Therapeutic Yoga Lifestyle practices to as many individuals as possible and will be held on site at the Hacienda Darby where Nydia’s Yoga Therapy Studio and the Open Hand Institute are located in San Antonio, Texas.

This program is open to EVERYONE… I will share that some of our participants who are seeking Continuing Education credit will be happy to know that I am applying to the Texas Physical Therapy Association for CEU approval that I expect to achieve early 2022. Yoga Alliance CEUs will be provided. I am providing registration information below.
You don’t have to be an expert yoga practitioner in order to participate, but it is important that you are in good health and able to participate in gentle/moderate therapeutic yoga practice, have a willing spirit and a sense of humor.  Remember, there are so many ways to learn.  Observation and being in the presence of practice can be transformational.
Truly, “The Only thing that you have to do is BREATHE.”–Nydia

2022 Program Schedule will focus on providing  Weekend Therapeutic Yoga Lifestyle Immersions  one Saturday per month.  A perfect way for you to be introduced to Pranayama, Meditation, Asana, Learning about the philosophy & science that supports Yoga Lifestyle & the Therapeutic Astanga Method™ that Nydia has created that melds physical therapy, fitness & traditional yoga.

Nyda is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Therapeutic Yoga Specialist and Yoga Researcher who has melded 40+ years of experience combining fitness, physical therapy and yoga to create the Therapeutic Yoga LIfestyle practices that you will experience in these Saturday programs. These practices have formed the foundation for the Yoga programs that she creates with her peers in the research teams at UTHealth in San Antonio. Results of this research has determined that practicing therapeutic yoga 3 times per week over the course of 6 months can improve respiratory and functional capacity and can have a positive effect on quality of life.
